I haven't been here in ages. Life has been chaotic and, most recently, heartbreaking.

I started my new job and all is well there. Before the new year things were just busy busy busy.

The trouble, worry, and heartbreak really started several hours before 2009 began. I drove over to my parents' house to spend a little time before having people over my house for the evening. About ten minutes down the road I heard three distinct clunks from the front of my car. I knew my power steering belt had just bit the dust. So I managed it to the auto shop and my daddio picked me up.

Two days later I went back over to my parents' house to see my mumma. Our dog, Emaline Suzanne, had been missing for about an hour. This wasn't entirely unusual because she liked to romp around town on a daily basis, especially in cold weather. I whistled and called for her. Eventually she appeared in the backyard but she was walking strangely. Her tail was tucked between her legs and she could only walk sideways. She fell down the steps. When we finally got her inside she laid down on her bed but she wouldn't take a nap. She didn't seem to be in any pain because no matter where we touched, she didn't whine or cry or yelp or anything. We thought maybe she had just sprained an ankle or something because she could still walk. We didn't even fathom that she might be in poor health. She always went for regular vet visits and they would say that she was in fine health. So my mum said she would take her to the vet if it got worse. Grizzly and I had errands to run so we left after about an hour of fussing over her.

At 9:30 the next morning, my phone rang and I immediately knew why. I protested and cried and panicked, put clothes on, and we went over to my parents' house. We said goodbye to my EmmaSue. I pet her for the last time and told her how much I love her. We buried her in the backyard with my old dogs Jessie and Chelsea.

My parents and I spent the day completely lost, bawling our eyes out. They explained that they had taken her to the emergency vet early in the morning. She had not slept at all that night because she was so panicked/afraid/frustrated that she couldn't move. The vet said she most likely had a tumor that had spread to her spine or she had blown a disc in her spine. Having her daily run through the woods on Friday had probably finally aggravated it to the point where it cut off her motor skills. She wasn't in any pain. But even with all the surgery she could have, she would likely never have walked again. She stopped eating and she wouldn't have lasted much longer.

I spent yesterday at their house expecting to hear her "Let me in!" bark at the back door. Waiting for her to run up to me and lean against my leg. Or paw at me for pets. Or jump up on the couch and clean her little white-sock paws. Or prance around, speaking her pup talk to me for a cookie. Or bark at me to play sock or shoe with her. Today my mum took her first walk alone in ten years and my daddio had his first breakfast in ten years without her at his side. I had dinner at my parents' house this evening and there was no sound of her little paws clicking as she danced around the table. Standing in the kitchen I kept looking out the back door, expecting to see her appear on the back porch, wiggling around and wagging her tail.

I feel empty. I love her so much. She was a wonderful companion. She was probably around twelve years old but mentally she was still a pup. She was full of life, always ready to run around and play. She had slowed down a bit in the past year but I honestly thought she had years left. She was the smartest dog I've ever met. She really learned how to communicate with all of us and knew how to tell us exactly what she wanted. She was clever and a total lovebug. She had more personality and character than probably most people.

It was so sudden that I think I am still in shock. My heart is going to be broken for quite some time.

I am so glad that she made her way back to us on Friday afternoon and that she got to run around in the snow. Thank god she did not feel any pain and did not suffer.

I named her after one of my favourite Ben Folds Five songs, "Emaline." The Suzanne just fit. I think my aunt came up with it. She was my EmmaSue (and EmmySue), my Mooseysoosey, my Meanie Moose, my Soosa, my MoonAmie, my little one, my pretty girl. She will always be loved and missed.

To top it all off, my mumma is going in for surgery tomorrow. Seriously.

I sincerely hope that your new year has been infinitely better than mine has been so far.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Welt Pocket Tote by Liesl Made.

This beautiful bag by Liesl has all the colours that remind me of Thanksgiving/Autumn. Check back soon.

Hope everyone's having a lovely day!

PS

In case you ever thought you were useless before having your morning coffee, I would like to prove to you that I absolutely take the cake. This morning I got my coffee ready. Put the coffee in. Plugged it in and waited for it to perc (it's an electric percolator)... After a couple seconds I started to smell something distinctly... wrong. Something smelled like it was burning. Was the plug shorting out? I unplugged it, checked it out. Nothing seemed wrong so I plugged it back in... Still smelled like awful. Then I realized that I couldn't even hear the water. I stared at it for at least a full minute before it hit me. I didn't put any water in the bleedin' thing!... Seriously.

"I intentionally wrote it out to be an illegible mess...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zl0Vd9Qc5YM/SOpJ56mRf3I/AAAAAAAAACs/Ke12tsyOqSA/s320/deathcab.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5254093174612262770" />
You wanted me to write you letters but I'd rather lose your address..." ~ "Information Travels Faster" by Death Cab for Cutie.

When I was a teenager I was very much into punk and (original) hardcore. You know, Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, Bad Religion, (early) AFI, The (ever-entertaining) Vandals, etc. But I needed a break from the racket now and then. Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Modest Mouse, Pavement, Pedro the Lion, Jets to Brazil, and friends provided a calm in the midst of that crazy, teenage storm.

Around the age of seventeen, my tastes began to mellow even more. At the forefront of this musical (r)evolution were my staples of Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and Dylan (the three closest to my heart/brain to this day). But there were also bands like Rilo Kiley, Elliott Smith, Wilco, Masters of the Hemisphere, Cat Power, and, of course, Death Cab for Cutie. I carried them all with me through the rest of high school, four years of college, and they remain with me to this day. And nothing reminds me of my freshman year of college quite like Death Cab for Cutie. For whatever reason (or probably more accurately, reasons I don't wish to get into), the atmosphere of their music perfectly fit that of my life back then.

So, when Ben (looking rather unlike himself but sounding perfect) & the Death Cab guys strolled out onto the stage last night in Atlantic City, I suddenly felt eighteen again. Quite a bizarre feeling, really. I got shivers when they played "We Laugh Indoors." The whole show I had flashbacks of walking around campus on grey, chilly days in late autumn and returning to my warm, cozy dorm room. There I would sit at my window with a cup of coffee and watch the seasons change. It reminded me of all the nervousness and excitement of being on my own for the first time, falling out with my first love and finding the next one, and wondering what on earth was going to happen next.

This has gone on longer than I had expected but it really was a great show. I'd been to the House of Blues previously for a raucous Flogging Molly show and was disappointed in the sound of the place. So I was hoping Death Cab would sound much better in the wee venue and, thank goodness, they sounded wonderful.

Their newest album, Narrow Stairs, is really fantastic (Had it come out two years ago, it would likely have helped me through the end of that second love until I found my darling Grizzly Bear. As it is, it pretty much sums up how I felt back then). They played a good mix of old stuff, too (though, I would have liked more from The Photo Album. But I might be the only one on that). They had a brilliant, infectious energy and seemed to really enjoy themselves. To top it all off, I was there with my dear Grizzly and two of my really good friends.

All right, really now. Enough already! I'm off to finish up a drawing.

Oops!

Well, I should have known better than to promise a post Sunday night. I have started a new little series inspired by being a twin.

A few nights ago I put up these cute little fawn twins...

Are You My Twin? We are twins!" ;-)

I'm working on more twin drawings, as well as a couple more "... for you." paintings. I will have more up this weekend and will update as soon as I do!

By the way, happy autumn! A few days late, I know, but I'm thrilled that fall is here! It's been nice and chilly (and a bit stormy!) here lately so I hope the cool weather lasts.

All right, I will be back hopefully Sunday evening with more. I long for the days when we own a place, though. I'm itching for furniture and paint colours of my own! Oh, and I've still got some prints to frame (as seen on the left side of the dresser) and hang. So that will be addressed soon. (I'll have more photos soon, too.)

Also, I'd like to introduce you to our little Arwen Eve (Yes, she is named after the Lord of the Rings character but I've shortened Arwen Evenstar into Arwen Eve because I like the sound of it better. She has a patch of white on her chest so the name does fit her perfectly.)...

I also call her My Little Assassin as she loves a good sneak attack...

It's a wonderful day here in Jersey. It's nice and chilly with the wind gusting quite strong. I'm so excited for autumn!

I will have an update this upcoming week. Tonight we're going to enjoy a night out at the pub (haven't been out in ages!) but this weekend I'll be painting and getting ready to update the shop. The windows are open, the air is off, and the animals are sound asleep in their favourite spots. Quite the cozy day so far!

We're all moved in to the new house. Our landlord let us move in Friday night because Saturday was supposed to be miserable weather. We set ourselves up and Grizzly's parents brought the animals down on Saturday. My brother came along while we did a bunch of shopping and then hung out for a bit afterwards. So far the end of our street has flooded twice but obviously that's part of coastal living.

If you've swung by the shop recently, you might have noticed that prints are now available! My Fox Plus Grizzly painting was featured on Mixed Plate last Friday! Super exciting! Liana features loads of really great finds there so go check it out!

I am working on a few new paintings, including the two other wee ones I mentioned previously. So I will hopefully update the shop again soon. Today is going to be painting (most likely with BBC America in the background) and tomorrow my best friend will be visiting to see the new house!

Have a lovely weekend, doves!

Three days until move-in!

Well, the sale is over, and I'm quite happy with how it went. We've packed all our belongings up in boxes and stacked it all in the van (borrowed from my Grizzly's incredibly accommodating parents). The animals are staying with his parents and we're staying at my (also incredibly accommodating) parents' house for the next three days. So all we have left to do is move in! Okay, that's not entirely true. Grizzly starts classes tomorrow (the reason we're moving back down to south Jersey). And on move-in day, we do have a bit of shopping left to take care of... You know, food and all that bunk.

So needless to say, I will not get to update the shop until sometime next week. I did, however, add those two wee paintings I mentioned in the last post...

A Pumpkin for You

Poppies for You

Also, I finally cleaned my scanner last week and rescanned all the paintings with that hideous streak down them! Hurrah! And! I bought some perfect paper for prints! So once I set up shop in the new house I will have prints available, as well. Excitement!

For now I'm off to do laundry and make a list of anything else we need for the house. I have a little (READ: GINORMOUS!) habit of making lists... for anything and everything.

I do hope you'll check back soon to see what's new!

New for you...

Hello, doves!

I have two new wee little paintings done, and they will be up in the shop tomorrow evening (probably quite late but they will be up). I woke up and went upstairs to eat breakfast only to find that we'd run out of coffee! EEP!

Now, this might seem pathetic to you, but I can not function without my coffee in the morning. So instead of making my coffee and getting on with my day, it took ages to get myself going. Eventually, I was showered, dressed, and ready so I took a walk around the corner and bought a bag of coffee. Now that I have my wonderful, wonderful caffeine, my day can continue. It's sad, I know.

So, in lieu of a painting, today I will leave you a photo of our pup. We have Argus, the doofy one-year-old English Mastiff, and Arwen, the snotty almost three-year-old black cat.

This was taken earlier this year on a hike in northern NJ...

His head is like a cinder block. Heheh :-) Both he and Arwen are taking their afternoon naps right now. So I'm going to pour myself another cup o' java and get some painting done.

Paint... everywhere!

I'm taking a break from painting (READ: making an absolute mess!) so here's what's been going on lately...

We put a deposit down on a lovely little beach house in Margate. We'll be moving back down to southern New Jersey in September! So excited to be back down there. I mean, sure, we're only an hour away now but it will be wonderful to see my family and south Jersey friends all the time. It's a wee little house but it has a backyard for the pup & us to enjoy, a gorgeous front sunroom (the cat will be in heaven! And I can't wait to watch storms in there!), and three bedrooms (one of which will be used as a studio/office/whatever room)! I know August just arrived but it just can't go quickly enough!

Also, since my last post I've added three new paintings to the shop...

Lily and Liam

Sunny and a Poppy

Ghostly Georgia and Gregor

I'm working on several others that I hope to have up soon. Perhaps one will be up tomorrow! My heart is longing for autumn and cooler weather but I'm trying to put up a few more summery pieces before I get totally obsessed with fall. I do love all the seasons... But this summer the heat has been so brutal that it's been hard to appreciate these lovely months... unless I'm at the beach, of course!

All right, so another shop update is on the way. And I can't wait to move into our new house! I am going to enjoy August, though, because I really do love summer, and there are plenty of beach days left!

Grapefruit Tea Deliciousness

Well, things have been busy, as always. I have not been able to paint much lately. I did add a new piece to the shop two weekends ago...

Elliott and Ella

And what of grapefruit tea, you wonder?

I just received my Demeter Grapefruit Tea perfume in the mail today, and I have to say, it is absolutely perfect! Granted, grapefruit is by far my favourite scent and Demeter's perfumes are always amazing anyway (last summer I got Grizzly a bottle of Demeter's Thunderstorm and it's incredible. You can smell the grass, the rain, the dirt, everything. It's totally tough and manly and dirty and comforting and awesome but not overpowering at all.) but this is the perfect light and yummy summer scent.

And now I must must must have some real grapefruit tea! Why have I not had it yet?! It sounds like the most wonderful drink. I think I'll have to order some soon. But in the meantime, I might try to make Martha's version. It sounds delicious! I can't even imagine how amazing it must smell, too.

So, just a quick update. I am working on several more pieces in the same vein as Elliott & Ella up there, and I have a few more button projects in mind, as well. We went to lunch, helped a wee baby goat get back on the right side of the fence at a petting zoo (He hopped through a bit of gate that was missing chicken wire. And boy, did he ever think he was smart... until he realized what he'd done and started wailing. It took a good twenty minutes of "Go, baby, go!" before he stopped crying and realized he could go back through the gate to mumma goat.), and watched the Celtics win against the Lakers. It was a very nice, relaxed day. Friday we went out with friends for some more celebration. Saturday was a little housewarming get-together for a few friends at their new house. And (!) Sunday was my daddio dearest's birthday!

Whew. In addition to all of that I actually have found time to paint. I'll be putting up two or three paintings this upcoming weekend, likely Sunday 15 June (also Father's Day!).

All right, I believe that's about it for now!
